Title: Library Media Specialist Grades K4-6th

Contract/Agreement Period:  10 months

Reporting Relationship:  Reports to the Lower School Principal


  • Must be a mature evangelical Christian who agrees with the school’s Statement of Faith and whose lifestyle is consistent with the school’s Declaration of Moral Integrity.
  • Must be a member in good standing of a local evangelical church.
  • Must be able to articulate a deep understanding of a biblically informed philosophy of Christian education.
  • Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must have a degree in School Library Media from an accredited college/university with a Professional Educator’s License. Experience in School Library Media and/or Master’s degree in Library Media from an accredited college/university preferred.
  • Should have demonstrated experience in working effectively on teams of Christian professionals in meeting high academic and spiritual standards and goals.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Administration and organization

  • Prepares and administers the media budget as required.
  • Evaluates, selects, and acquires media center materials and equipment to support the curriculum, mission message and ministry.
  • Evaluates, selects and acquired media center materials and equipment to support and meet the varied interests, abilities, and needs of students and faculty.
  • Re-evaluates materials and equipment regularly, weeding those which are obsolete or worn.
  • Administers and maintains all information and circulation technology within the Library Media Program.
  • Organizes and maintains media center records, statistics, and inventories.
  • Creates an appropriate climate in the Media Center for critical thinkers, engaged readers, and enthusiastic researchers.
  • Provides and maintains an appropriate atmosphere in the Media Center which defines expected behavior, enforces disciplinary policies in a consistent manner, and works to develop within each student a sense of self-discipline.
  • Informs school community about library media center programs, materials, and services.
  • Coordinates the school library media program with school-wide goals.
  • Helps to provide for the maintenance and repair of all media center equipment and materials.
  • Organizes and maintains the media center as a functional, attractive, safe, and orderly environment for optimal use by students and faculty.
  • Trains and supervises all media center staff, student aides, and volunteers in the performance of their duties.


  • Provides programs and services which encourage lifelong reading and learning.
  • Assists students in developing listening, viewing, reading comprehension, and information processing skills.
  • Provides and integrates hands-on-training in the use of up-to-date and emerging technologies for creative and effective learning in support of the 5thand 6thgrade iLab which meets STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) criteria.
  • Provides staff development opportunities in the use of information resources and in the utilization of information and instructional technologies.
  • Collaborates with teachers to incorporate information skills into all areas of the curriculum.
  • Works in cooperation with teachers to design activities, materials, and instruction which promote curriculum integration.
  • Provides student instruction in the operation of hardware and software necessary to use information in any format.
  • Informs school community of laws and policies pertaining to the use and communication of ideas, such as copyright and acceptable use.

Curriculum support

  • Participates in curriculum design; integrates curriculum needs into the library media program.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of books, other instructional materials, and equipment.
  • Maintains a professional collection.
  • Maintains a current file of selection resources which staff may use for ordering supplemental curriculum needs.
  • Works with other libraries’ personnel (i.e. church and school libraries, public libraries, and university libraries) to coordinate efforts of common interest.

Professional development

  • Remains current in the library media profession through conferences, workshops, professional reading, and classes.


  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and works with other staff members in planning school activities, instructional goals, and objectives.
  • Participates in extracurricular activities as mutually agreed upon by faculty and administration.
  • Maintains proper professional relationship with students and other employees.
  • Assumes other appropriate responsibilities as required of faculty members.
  • Performs other reasonable duties during school necessary to the effective operation of the school when requested by the principal.
